There is no clear modern correspondence to this aspect of Chinese imperial ceremony, much less one that would make sense to a general audience. It is remarkable that Open Source works so well in its place (although critics will happily ascribe a religious nature to some of its supporters).

The sacred vessels were these bronze art pieces, used for ritual ceremonies that (at the top level) were a central element for imperial rule. I don’t know the content of the ceremonies, but I believe they were intended to propitiate heaven, ensure continued prosperity, honor the ancestors, that kind of thing.
